Imagine my surprise when a friend tweeted me a couple weeks back, telling me that the Moodys had been named as recipients for A4CWSN’s iPad4U $199 iPad promotion for special needs families! Do you know how much iPads normally run? I was so excited!
But wait. There was that little $199 still needed.
When I filled out the form and wrote the essay to apply for the $199 iPad I was sure we would be okay financially and could swing it. But, life throws you curveballs sometimes. Just days before we found out the boys could get the $199 iPad, we ended up with a small financial crisis.
When you live on very little income, a small financial crisis translates into a huge one. I still thought we might be able to swing it. I said a prayer and then, regretfully, put up a ChipIn widget. I’ve had three amazing donors already gift us with $70 towards an iPad for the Minis. Going into this weekend, I thought I could still swing the rest of the cost.
And then I lost one of my freelancing contracts.
I don’t like asking for help. I like giving it. So I drug my feet in writing this post.
But a friend reminded me that this community, this amazing community of people I so love to support and be a part of, that this community might be willing to help if I only asked.
I’m going with what my friend said, and I am going to ask for your help, because I dream of the ways we can use software to help the kids with language and other skills. Language! (?That’s me drooling!). If we are indeed able to get the iPad I will write about it and blog my heart out about how we use it with the minis. And I think it is possible.
Because I’ve seen the amazing generosity of this amazing community.
So, rather than just asking for you to help me, give you a thank you, and send you on your way. I would like to go one step further. I would like to ask you to do one (OR ALL!) of the following as well:
I am desperately hoping to raise the full $200 needed for this iPad. So that you understand what’s at stake here. There are three minis in this house who will benefit from this, not as a toy, but as a tool to help them gain needed skills.
$200 is but a small percentage of what the full cost of this iPad would have been. Any amount over $200 raised for this promotion will go towards A4CWSN to be used to help another child receive an iPad (they have several free iPads they are giving away as well as more discounted ones for special needs families).
You guys should know by now I care about causes I am passionate about. Obviously, I am passionate about this because it’s personal. But also because this is a cause worth being passionate about. This week, I invite you to read about my Cause of the Week, Ayn’s story, to see another cause I am passionate about. If you feel so moved and have the money, perhaps you could grant a few dollars toward their cause? I don’t like to take the spotlight off of the causes I support. But I am a mom before anything else. And this … this will support my kids.
These are the things I’m passionate about, not the iPads so much as how they can help special needs kids. Not “Ayn’s cause, but Ayn, and her father and brothers, because she was taken away from her family for the crime of being autistic, for having special needs. Life is about more than tweeting and posting, about more than what you happen to be doing; life is also about how you give back to those around you.
Will you help a special needs family today?
Can you help with Ayn’s cause? Can you help the Minis get their iPad? Can you you help with money to help another special needs child get an iPad?
